4 Jan - Despite box office king Rajinikanth releasing a movie in 2021, the year actually belonged to Vijay, whose movie "Master" was named the highest grossing Tamil movie of 2021. Despite releasing in January when most movie theatres were still on lockdown mode and/or reduced occupancy, the film was able to make Rs 300 crores (approx. RM168 million) worldwide.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the movie stars Vijay in the role of a professor who clashes with a ruthless gangster (Vijay Sethupathi) who uses children for his criminal activities.
It is also revealed that the Hindi remake of the film is set to begin production this year, with names like Salman Khan and Shahid Kapoor doing the rounds. On the other hand, Rajinikanth's "Annaatthe" is named the second highest grossing Tamil movie, after collecting Rs 240 crores worldwide following its release on Deepavali, followed by Sivakarthikeyan's "Doctor" at Rs 105 crores, and "Maanadu" at Rs 100 crores.
