When he first laid eyes on the awards!
He has been chasing it for years!

But the Oscars just didn't recognise him. |
DiCaprio started acting when he was 15 and made his film debut in the 1991 film, "Critters 3" when he was 16.
He got his first Oscar nomination in 1993 for Best Supporting Actor for the film, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".
Believe it or not, he has been nominated for six Academy Awards in the span of 13 years – five for acting and one for producing!
Let's take a look at all the Academy Awards nominations for which Leo had to endure losses for and his journey to winning his first ever Oscar!
1. "What's Eating Gilbert" (1993) – Best Supporting Actor
Leonardo DiCaprio received his first ever Oscar nomination when he was 19 years old for the Lasse Hallström-directed drama, "What's Eating Gilbert", starring alongside 30-year-old Johnny Depp. The award however, went over to Tommy Lee Jones who acted in "The Fugitive". For the same category, DiCaprio was also nominated at Golden Globe Awards and National Board of Review Awards where he won the latter.
2. "The Aviator" (2005) – Best Actor
|
At the age of 31, DiCaprio was once again nominated for an American biographical drama film, "The Aviator", directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law and more. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and had won five awards at the Oscars including Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction and Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett. Though he didn't win an Oscar that year, DiCaprio did manage to take home a Golden Globe Award for the same category. DiCaprio lost the Oscar to Jamie Foxx who played Ray Charles in "Ray".
3. "Blood Diamond" (2007) – Best Actor
|
Two years later, DiCaprio was nominated in the same category for the American-German political war thriller, "Blood Diamond" directed by Edward Zwick. The film was nominated in five Academy Awards' categories, but won none of them. The Best Actor Oscars that year went to Forest Whitaker who played the third President of Uganda, Idi Amin in the critically acclaimed drama, "The Last King of Scotland".
4. "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2014) – Best Actor & Best Picture (as producer)
|
During this year, many people were confident that DiCaprio would finally get his Oscar for sure as he was nominated for two categories. However, even though the film was nominated in huge categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, it failed to win in any of the categories. Nevertheless, DiCaprio received accolades from other award ceremonies like Best Actor in a Comedy at the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at Golden Globe Awards, #WTF Moment at MTV Movie Awards and others. Matthew McConaughey who also acted alongside DiCaprio in "The Wolf of Wall Street", won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club".
5. "The Revenant" (2016) – Best Actor (WON!)
|
Finally, the long-awaited moment that everyone has been waiting for is here – Leonardo DiCaprio received his first ever Oscar for the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film, "The Revenant"! With twelve nominations, the film takes home three awards which include Best Cinematography, Best Director and of course, Best Actor for DiCaprio! That's not all, DiCaprio had also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor. Seems like 2016 is a great year for Leonardo DiCaprio, and certainly no one deserve the award more than he does!
