Jimmy Kimmel tapped to host the 2017 Oscars

Jimmy Kimmel has his own late night show on TV called "Jimmy Kimmel Live!".

6 Dec – Comedian cum host, Jimmy Kimmel, is set to front the 89th Academy Awards that's set to take place on 26 February 2017.

This was according to Variety who reported that the comedian was long in the list of the nominees to host the event.

'ABC Television' -a television production company who partners with Academy Awards in broadcasting the show- wanted Kimmel to host the show for quite some time since Kimmel's own late night show is aired on the channel too.

But now all that speculation has been put to bed as the man himself has confirmed that he would host the most prestigious night in the movie industry.

The comedian tweeted that ""Yes, I am hosting the Oscars. This is not a prank. And if it is, my revenge on @TheAcademy will be terrible & sweet."

This was then followed up by a statement from the Academy president, Cheryl Boone Isaac, who reportedly said that Jimmy understands the audience and knows how to captain a ship with several moving parts.

Not foreign to hosting award nights, Jimmy Kimmel had previously hosted the American Music Awards and has twice fronted the Emmy Awards in 2012 and 2016.

It was his recent performance at the Emmys that managed to grab the attention of the Academy team with The Jimmy Kimmel Live! star winning rave reviews for his performance.

Nonetheless, the job that's regarded as the trickiest job in the industry will certainly put Jimmy to the test, but if his Emmy awards gigs are anything to go by then he would most definitely do a great job.

The 89th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will honour the best films of 2016 through 24 different categories.

The awards will be held at Los Angeles on 26 February 2017.
