11 May – Local horror, "Jangan Pandang Belakang", has become the second highest grossing movie in Singapore when it collected RM318,000 at five screens in its first weekend. This, according to local independent film-maker Amir Muhammad, is easily the highest collection for any Malaysian movie in Singapore in at least a decade. "Jangan Pandang Belakang" had overtaken "Sembilu 2" on 5 May to become the top-grossing local movie in Malaysia movie of all time. It collected RM6.33 million to knock the 1995 "Sembilu 2" out of its perch. "JPB", which opened in 51 screens nationwide on April 5, was going great guns right from Day One when it collected a record RM410,000 on its opening day. The 'scare-'em-silly' momentum seems to be continuing across the Causeway when "JPB" gave "Spider-Man 3" a run for its money by coming in second at the box-office stakes. It opened on 3 May while "Spidey-3" premiered on 1 May. The latter collected RM5.7 million at 88 screens as of 6 May. This bold move by David Teo of Metrowealth Movie Productions (the producer of "JPB") to pit "JPB" head-on against Hollywood blockbuster "Spider-Man 3" seems to have paid off. Teo told Cinema Online that the prints (film reels) for Singapore have been specially made with Mandarin and English subtitles. However, the response in Singapore had been encouraging right from the start when "JPB" collected S$25,000 (RM73,000) on its opening day on May 3.
