25 Mar – In support of Earth Hour this 27 March, Cathay Cineplexes e@Curve and GSC Cinemas will be switching off their non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Doing their bit for Mother Nature all year round, Big Cinemas Lotus Five Star have been using energy saving light bulbs at all outlets, while MBO Cinemas replaced all plastic bags with environmental friendly paper bags since October 2008. Meanwhile, GSC Cinemas implements "No Plastic Bag" day which currently runs in Selangor at GSC Tropicana City, GSC 1 Utama, GSC Summit USJ, GSC IOI Mall, and GSC Shaw Centrepoint Klang every Saturday and in Penang every Monday at GSC Gurney Plaza Penang, GSC Sunway Seberang Jaya and Queensbay Mall. Movie patrons will be charged 20 cent per plastic bag during "No Plastic Bag" day and collections will be donated to a charity organisation. In order to reduce the use of plastic, moviegoers can purchase a "How To Train Your Dragon" reusable bag at GSC Cinemas with every Large Caramel Popcorn Combo Set, while stocks last.
In Singapore, moviegoers can catch the screening of "Earth", the first film in the Disneynature series, as it opens in cinemas on 22 April 2010. Narrated by James Earl Jones, it tells the remarkable story of three animal families and their amazing journey across the planet we all call home. Director Alastair Fothergill ("Deep Blue") and director Mark Linfield show aerial shots and close-up views without precedent. The spectator has the opportunity to observe fascinating landscapes and animals in the wild, from a perspective which people could largely not see with their own eyes.
