18 Dec – Last weekend (13 – 16 December), local moviegoers got to go on an epic adventure to Middle Earth, following the release of one of the most anticipated films of the year that was Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", resulting in the film replacing Golden Globe nominee "Life Of Pi" in first place in Malaysia's box office charts. Ang Lee's adventure drama film then fell to second place, while local actor-director Ah Niu's second directorial feature "The Golden Couple" took third place. In addition, Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" smashed the U.S. box office with USD 84.6 million, becoming the biggest December film opening ever in North America that was even better than the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy. The film debuted in the top spot, which was held by "Skyfall" previously. Meanwhile, "Rise Of The Guardians" showed its staying power by keeping second place in its fourth weekend of release, while Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" moved up to the third.
In Singapore, Bilbo Baggins's unexpected journey was also the main attraction in cinemas over the week gone by with "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in first place. This film was followed by "Hotel Transylvania" and "Life Of Pi" in second and third places respectively. New movies that opened over the week in Malaysia are "Neetham En Ponvasatham" and "Kumki". New movies that opened over the week in Singapore are "Intouchables (2D)" "Bachelorette", "A Werewolf Boy" and "Kumki (2D)".
