11 Jun – Sony Pictures Animation have announced that they will be making a combination of live-action and computer animation film based on the famous Sega video game, "Sonic the Hedgehog". The studio is teaming up with Marza Animation Planet, a Japan-based CGI animation studio to bring this popular gaming icon to life with the help from "The Fast and Furious" series' producer Neal H. Moritz.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Sonic is one of the biggest gaming icons with a billion-dollar franchise and the game has sold more than 140 million copies in two decades. Columbia Pictures President of Production, Hannah Minghello commented, "There are limitless stories to tell with a character like "Sonic the Hedgehog", and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
Evan Susser and Van Robichaux will be in charge of the screenplay, while Toby Ascher will serve as an executive-producer. Sonic greatest nemesis, Dr Eggman will be featured in the story, however, it is not confirmed if other characters from "Sonic the Hedgehog" game series will be making an appearance as well.
