2 Jun – Filmmaker Tunku Mona Riza's "Redha" is a film that highlights the plight of a couple that have to endure the trials and tribulations of raising their autistic child. Although the box office results for the film were poor, it had received favourable reviews from audiences who consider "Redha" as a great film to bring awareness towards autism. To support the cause, GSC Cinemas had held a campaign where RM1 would be contributed to The National Autism Society Of Malaysia (NASOM) for every movie ticket purchased for "Redha". The campaign had managed to collect RM30,000 and a cheque presentation ceremony was held this morning at GSC Nu Sentral.
The CEO of GSC Cinemas, Ms Koh Mei Lee who was present at the event said, "We at GSC, hold close to our heart, the interest of the community in which we do business. We care about the society and we believe that to champion a cause we must take the first step before expecting others to join us. Awareness is only the beginning. Although in small steps, GSC hopes to walk with our customers towards accepting and empathising with this community." The President of NASOM, Dato' Haji Megat Ahmad Shahrani who received the cheque expressed his gratitude to GSC Cinemas and Tunku Mona Riza for taking the initiative to bring awareness for autism. "NASOM is very grateful to Tunku Mona Riza for making "Redha". It is an effort that is much hoped for by the autism community and it is a brave step." "Even though the film didn't make it as a box office film, however the touching story based on the life of a family dealing with their autistic child helps NASOM champion our cause for acceptance and understanding." The film's director, Tunku Mona Riza also said a few words to say about the campaign, and expressed that she was thankful that her film serves as a voice to those with autism to help change society's perception on the condition.
