It's one man against the wilderness in "The Revenant".

12 Jan – Here's another dramatic achievement for "The Revenant", apart from its Best Motion Picture (Drama) win at the 73rd Golden Globes, the movie has made an impressive 21-spot leap on the U.S. weekend box office for 7 to 10 January 2016.

The movie, directed by Golden Globes winners Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, may not have enough force to take down the latest "Star Wars" instalment, but it did make a speedy climb to the top three.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" stayed put at number one last weekend, making another USD42.3 million. Based on Box Office Mojo stats, the epic saga now has a USD1.7 billion worldwide gross.

This makes it the third highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, placing behind "Titanic's" USD2.1 billion and "Avatar's" USD2.7 billion.

As for "The Revenant", for two weeks it had been stuck at number 23 since its limited release on 25 December 2015 – which was to qualify it for the 88th Academy Awards. But third time's the charm, and by its third week, it has landed at number two at the U.S. weekend chart.

This is of course boosted by its wide opening weekend on 8 January, where it made a USD39.8 million weekend gross, bringing its worldwide gross to USD61.8 million. The numbers will only crank up from there as the movie has yet to open in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia as well as the U.K.

Down to number three at the weekend chart was Will Ferrell's comedy "Daddy's Home", co-starring Mark Wahlberg. It made USD15 million last weekend while its worldwide gross has come up to USD155 million.

Lead actor Shah Rukh Khan may have called "Dilwale" a box office disappointment, however it is anything but that in Malaysia. The Hindi movie climbed up two spots and landed at number one, pushing "Ip Man 3" down to number two.

Meanwhile, number three is occupied by newcomer, "The Forest". Despite its lukewarm welcome from the critics, it still pulled in audiences as, let's face it, horror is one of the most watched genres in the industry.

There weren't much changes in Singapore last weekend as "Ip Man 3" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" made no move from their respective first and second places. However, third place now belongs to the newly-released "Mojin: The Lost Legend".

Other new releases in Malaysia for last weekend are "Friend Request", "Mojin: The Lost Legend", "Langit Cinta", "The Big Short", "Backtrack", "Peigal Jaakirathai" "Macbeth", "May Who?", "Wazir" and "Yowamushi Pedal".

Last weekend also saw the releases of "Chauranga", "Malai Nerathu Mayakkam", "Wazir", "Azhagu Kutti Chellam", "Ghost Ship", "The Priests", "Fathers and Daughters", "Joy", "The Forest" and "The Danish Girl" in Singapore.
