21 Jun – Toys rule the box office over Father's Day weekend, making their great escape with an estimated US$109 million in United States, according to Box Office Mojo. "Toy Story 3" also became the third animated film to top US$100 million in the first weekend, joining "Shrek The Third" at US$121.6 million and "Shrek 2" at US$108 million. Poll voters on Cinema Online's site showed that the most exciting thing during the weekend was World Cup, while "Toy Story 3" tailed closely behind. Reuniting voice stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, "Toy Story 3" easily kicked Sony's "The Karate Kid" to second place in Malaysia and Singapore. Cinema crowd over the weekend boomed with Toy Story fans as showtimes blinked "selling fast" throughout the day. In Malaysia, the film marks the biggest opening weekend for an animation release of all-time, biggest Pixar/Disney animation release of all-time, biggest franchise opening weekend for an animation release of all-time, and biggest 3D opening weekend for an animation release of all-time, according to movie distributor Walt Disney Studios Malaysia.
Based on Cinema Online's Hot Movie Checks, "The Karate Kid" holds peek position, followed by "Toy Story 3", "Raavanan", "The A-Team" and "Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time". The annual Japanese Film Festival also took place over the weekend at GSC 1 Utama and GSC Mid Valley screening eight movies at only RM5, with award-winning drama "Dear Doctor" leading the pack. The festival will then move up to Penang from 25 to 27 June 2010 at GSC Gurney Plaza.
