"The Vow" romances Valentines

Love is already in the air at the U.S. box office as "The Vow" dominates weekend before Valentines.

14 Feb – Michael Sucsy's romantic film "The Vow" has taken its pole position in this week's North American box office (9 to 12 Feb). Opening at US $41.2 million, the film shows Channing Tatum bringing out his soft and sensitive side for his wife, played by Rachel McAdams. Second spot falls into the hands of action film "Safe House", earning US $40.2mil with Ryan Reynolds, a CIA Agent – playing house-keeper to criminal Denzel Washington. Dwayne Johnson's chest popping moves has popped "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" up to third spot with US $27.3mil in box office for the weekend just gone.

As for Malaysia, being humble is all it took for Adrian Teh's "The Wedding Diary" to earn top flight with stars like Aniu and Elanne Kwong. This Malaysian-made film is about a humble Hokkien Malaysian engineer and a wealthy Cantonese Singaporean beauty of whom gets hitched but faces issues from their families because of their culture and country difference. Azhari Mohd. Zain's "Hantu Dalam Botol Kicap" scared their way to being runners-up by seeing disobedient children unleashing a horrid ghost trapped in a soy sauce bottle. "Chronicle" however, dropped a spot to third place last weekend, possibly giving a sign that soy sauce ghouls are freakier than power-frantic teens.

Down-under in Singapore, Kate Beckinsale continues the violence in "Underworld: Awakening" to maintain their glory from last week. "Safe House" kept their second spot in Singapore as well with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington winning attention. Actor Dane DeHaan's powers are probably what is keeping Josh Tranks' "Chronicle" in third spot for another week.

In Malaysia, other releases over the weekend were, "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu ", "Man On A Ledge" and "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace 3D", the latter which surprisingly failed to place in the top three at the local box office, opening at a mere seventh place instead.

On the other hand, other releases in Singapore were, "J. Edgar", "The Billionaire", "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu", "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace 3D", "The Wedding Diary", "Romancing In Thin Air", and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy".
