McQuarrie on for "Mission: Impossible"

Christopher McQuarrie confirmed to be directing the next "Mission: Impossible" film.

6 Aug – It seems that director Christopher McQuarrie is Tom Cruise's latest fan after Steven Spielberg, having signed on to direct the next instalment of "Mission: Impossible", with Cruise to reprise the role of Impossible Missions Force (IMF) agent Ethan Hunt.

This marks the second time that McQuarrie has directed Cruise, and the third time that he has worked on a film starring the 51-year-old star. Previously, McQuarrie has directed "Jack Reacher", has produced and wrote "Valkyrie", as well as writing for the upcoming "Edge Of Tomorrow", all of which are headlined by Cruise.

Despite his screenplay writing credits, McQuarrie will not be penning a screenplay for "Mission: Impossible 5". Instead, he will be directing from from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. The project will be produced by Cruise through Tom Cruise Productions, Paramount and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, who also served as producers on the previous films in the hit series.

"I am thrilled to reunite with Chris for the latest instalment in the "Mission" series," said Cruise. "I began producing the films with the goal that a different director with his own vision would make each one. Chris is an extraordinary filmmaker who will deliver the heart-pounding action and thrills that audiences around the world have come to expect from the "Mission: Impossible" franchise."

The last "Mission: Impossible" film, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol", grossed nearly USD 700 million around the world and became Cruise's highest grossing film to date.
