21 Mar – Looks like Malaysian moviegoers is loving director Sam Raimi's "Oz The Great And Powerful", with the L. Frank Baum's novel-based fantasy adventure film managing to stay in the number one spot in the weekend box office in Malaysia from 14 – 17 March. "Warm Bodies", one of the newcomers last weekend that stars rising star Nicholas Hoult snatched the runner-up spot away from another Hoult-starring film, the fairytale themed "Jack The Giant Slayer", which fell to the third place. Directed by Jonathan Levine, "Warm Bodies" is a romantic zombie comedy that focuses on the relationship of a zombie named R and a young girl named Julie that eventually transforms their lifeless world. In the fourth place is the newly debuted sequel of Jack Neo's military themed comedy drama "Ah Boys To Men: Part 2". This film picks up where the first left off with a series of events that challenge the friendship between the national service trainees in Tekong Island, as Ken Chow (Joshua Tan) turns over a new leaf with the support of his father (Richard Low). Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning picture "Django Unchained" did not achieve what most people expected. The spaghetti Western film that follows the journey of a black slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) to save his wife from the brutal Mississippi plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) opened in ninth spot. Meanwhile, in US, "Oz The Great And Powerful" was able to protect its box office crown for the second consecutive week with USD 41 million. The Walt Disney Pictures-distributed film topped new releases including Halle Berry's "The Call" and "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", a brand new comedy by Don Scardino that gathered an elite group of comedians consists of Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi. Carell plays Las Vegas magician Burt Wonderstone, who unites with his old partner Anton Marvelton (Buscemi) to take on dangerous street magician Steve Gray (Carrey).
In Singapore, "Oz The Great And Powerful" was defeated by the newly released "Warm Bodies" and fell to the second place while "Jack The Giant Slayer" rounded up the top three. Other new movies that opened over the week in Malaysia are "Pardesi", "The Call", "Jolly LLB", "Vathikuchi", "Ops Kossa Dappa 3", "The Last Exorcism Part 2" and "Awan Dania The Movie". Other new movies that opened over the week in Singapore are "Snitch", "The Haunting Of Connecticut 2: Ghosts Of Georgia", "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", "Confession Of Murder", "Outrage Beyond", "Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge", "The Gatekeepers", "Princess And Seven Kung Fu Masters", "Jolly LLB", "Army Daze", and "Dinosaurs (3D)".
