9 Jan – The 74th Golden Globes Awards took place today at Beverly Hilton Hotel, hosted by actor-comedian Jimmy Fallon. Out of the 14 awards handed out under the movie category at the event, half of them were nabbed by the biggest winner of the night – "La La Land". The movie, which was also parodied by Fallon for the show's opening earlier, bagged seven awards, setting a new record for the most Golden Globes won by a single movie. Its wins include Best Actor and Best Actress for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and Best Director for Damien Chazelle, while also taking home awards for its remarkable soundtrack.
Before "La La Land" set tongues wagging for its impressive win, earlier during the awards show, one of the hot topics was Aaron Taylor-Johnson's surprise win for Best Supporting Actor, which did not sit well with audiences since most were hoping Mahershala Ali ("Moonlight") would win the prize. Though the "Moonlight" actor did not go home with the award, the movie itself did win Best Motion Picture. Meanwhile, the third highest-grossing movie of 2016, "Zootopia", won Best Animated Motion Picture. Other highlights of the event include Meryl Streep being named as the 2017 recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Ryan Reynolds kissing Andrew Garfield (thus making the day for Deadpool/Spider-Man fans everywhere) and a moving tribute to the late mother-daughter duo, Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds.
