15 Jan - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has canceled its traditional Academy Awards nominees luncheon in response to the devastating wildfires affecting Los Angeles.

Additionally, the previously postponed nomination announcement has been canceled, with the Academy Award finalists now set to be revealed through a virtual event on 23 January.

"We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community," said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang in a joint statement. "The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship."

The Oscar nominations voting period, which began at 9 AM on Wednesday, 8 January, has been extended further to 5 PM on 17 January.

In contrast, the Recording Academy has confirmed that the Grammy Awards will proceed as scheduled on 2 February. "This year's show, however, will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours," the Recording Academy announced.
