10 Apr – The 2016 Singaporean film directed and written by Boo Junfeng, "Apprentice", has been winning awards left and right for its story narrative and cast at film festivals across the globe. This time, the film has been announced the winner of two big prizes at the 32nd edition of the Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) in Switzerland. The film was named the Grand Prix winner and Critic's Choice Award winner at the recent FIFF. "The feedback from the audience and responses I've gotten just at the festival has been quite amazing. It's good to know that the film stays with people who have seen it," stated a quote from director Boo Junfeng on the movie's official Facebook page. Before this, "Apprentice" has won the NETPAC award at the Golden Horse Film Festival Awards, Best Narrative Film at the Interfaith Awards of the St. Louis International Film Festival, the Golden Orchid Special Mention for "Best Acting Ensemble" at the Hawaii International Film Festival and the film's director, Boo Junfeng, won the Rising Director award for the Busan International Film Festival. "Apprentice" is a psychological drama that focuses on the death penalty from the executioner's point of view. Aiman, played by Firdaus Rahman, is a 28-year-old Malay correctional officer who gets transferred to the territory's top prison. There, Aiman meets the charismatic 65-year-old sergeant, Rahim, played by Wan Hanafi Su, who is the prison's long-serving chief executioner. When Rahim's assistant suddenly quits, Aiman is asked to be his apprentice. After that, Aiman has to learn how to deal with ending people's lives. The film premiered at the Capitol Building in Singapore on 14 June 2016. It was released to the public on 30 June. It then premiered in Malaysia on 24 November that same year.
