24 Jan – Two fans of actress Ana de Armas are suing Universal in a proposed class action, claiming that they were somehow duped into watching its 2019 movie, "Yesterday". One Californian Michael Rosza and Maryland resident Conor Woulfe recently filed the complaint in California federal court, saying that they thought actress Ana de Armas would play a substantial role in the romantic comedy based on the movie trailer, but was unhappy to find that the actress doesn't appear in the final cut of the film. The complaint read, "Although Defendant included the scenes with Ms. De Armas in the movie trailer advertisements, for the purposes of promoting Yesterday and enticing film sales and rentals, Ms. De Armas is not and was never in the publicly released version of the movie."
The complaint also claimed that Universal used De Armas' fame to promote the film by including her scenes in the trailer, with plaintiffs now seeking at least US$ 5 million on behalf of Californian and Maryland residents who paid to watch the film in the theatres. Screenwriter Richard Curtis previously revealed that the actress' scene was cut from the film because her character, who is an actress of whom the lead Jack (Himesh Patel) feels attracted to, would influence audiences' perception of Jack's character. "Yesterday" follows a singer-songwriter named Jack Malik, who wakes up from an accident to find himself in a world where the Beatles never existed, and becoming an overnight sensation by performing the band's hit songs.
