Just Go With It

Danny (Adam Sandler) has a unique approach to picking up women - in order to break the ice and gain their sympathy, he pretends to be stuck in an unhappy marriage. The instant he brandishes his wedding ring, the deal is all but cinched. But when Danny finally meets a woman (Brooklyn Decker) that he really would want to marry, he abandons his usual approach for something more subtle. Incredibly, it works. But when she discovers the wedding band that he used to use as a pick-up prop, Danny attempts to cover his tracks by falling back on his tried-and-true divorce line. Unfortunately, the plan backfires when his new girlfriend asks to meet his future ex. Desperate, Danny recruits his office manager, Katherine (Jennifer Aniston), to validate his ruse by posing as his current wife. Before long, the lies are snowballing, and by the time Katherine`s kids get involved and everyone comes together for a trip to Hawaii, it`s not a matter of if Danny`s plan will fall through, but when.

Enter familiar Adam Sandler and Happy Madison rom-com territory with "Just Go With It", a PG-13 foray into new loathsome characters for frat guy amusement - this time recycling some old Jenny Aniston magic and introducing a surefire siren in first-time film actress Brooklyn Decker, whose 36Cs you will see an obscenely great deal more in the movie proper than the poster, in which only her back appears, to give way to Aniston-Sandler billing.

We're introduced to Sandler's zero-to-hero character Danny though a retro trailer, where he gets his heart broken on his wedding day and realises in a bar later that by evoking 'abused husband' sympathy, the wedding ring is an all-powerful tool for casual lays. Fast forward to the now and he's a successful, free-scoring plastic surgeon. As Hollywood cliches will have it, Danny is however genuinely love struck by a blonde school teacher and now needs to hire his clinic's receptionist (Aniston) to pretend to be his soon-to-be ex-wife, so as not to give away his M.O. as a lying coward all these years.

Obviously the charade expands to the sort of ridiculous proportions required for box-office comedy gold, so the movie necessarily includes more roles, like Nicole Kidman as a bitchy school friend, Nick Swardson as a masquerading European and child actor Bailee Madison ("Bridge To Terabithia", 2007) as a cheeky tween with an intentional fake British accent, not to mention a gay cameo for musician Dave Matthews who was sporting enough to be filmed here picking up a coconut with all his rectal might. The lot get dragged to Hawaii and the performances here are more committed than funny but there is a requisite screen quality to the cast that is duly met, ensuring a safe passage for the movie through its otherwise rather unbearable 110-minute runtime.

However, for a date movie "Just Go With It" is Sandler schmaltz that will guarantee a few giggles.
