Disney content bids Netflix adieu

No more movies from the 'house of mouse' will be available on Netflix starting 2019.

9 Aug – Netflix subscribers would have to say goodbye to all Disney's contents (which include the "Star Wars" franchise and Marvel's movies) starting 2019 following an announcement from The Walt Disney Company.

The company states on its own official website that at the beginning of 2019 calendar year slate, its distribution agreement with Netflix will be ended, with all its content pulled out of the giant streaming portal.

Disney also states that it will start its own Netflix-style streaming service, which is set to launch in 2019. With the new platform in place, all Disney movies released after the 2019 theatrical slate, which includes "Toy Story 4" and "Frozen 2", will only be available there.

This follows Disney's majority-share acquisition of BAMTech, a streaming technology and marketing company, when it first bought one-third of the company share with the later addition of 42 percent for USD1.58 billion.

The purchase arise from the thought of providing a more direct relationship between Disney and its consumers in the current media landscape, and "BAMTech's full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market", Disney CEO Bob Iger said in the release.

According to NBC News, upon hours after the announcement, Netflix shares has fallen 5%, while Disney's roars 4%.
